Do you know what a real coastal fisherman’s workday looks like?
Hiiumaa’s eighth-graders don’t have to imagine it, they’ve experienced it firsthand!
During the “At Sea with a Fisherman” event, part of the island’s educational fish days, all of Hiiumaa’s 8th-grade students traded their desks for the fresh sea air for a day. Throughout the day, the youth learned the fundamentals of coastal fishing: they were introduced to various types of fishing gear, practiced essential maritime knots, and tested their knowledge in a fish-themed quiz.
The clear highlight of the day was the boat trip, where students joined a local coastal fisherman to actually check the trap nets.
Watch the video to see how the students fared with their knot-tying, what fishy facts they learned, and what exciting things they pulled from the sea!
